Rent a Bike, Scooter or Moped in Nha Trang, Vietnam

III. Do You Need a License to Rent a Motorbike in Vietnam?

According to Vietnam’s transport law, a driving license is obligatory for anyone who controls vehicles including motorbikes except the type with a capacity of less than 50cc. However, almost all motorbikes in Vietnam now have a capacity of 125cc and more than 125cc. It means you need a driving license to rent and ride a motorbike in Vietnam.

Regarding the driving licenses and permits in Vietnam, the A1 license allows you to drive a bike up to 175cc. Foreigners living in Vietnam can do a procedure to convert their national driving license to Vietnamese driving licenses in a condition that they have a corresponding driving license in your country instead of passing any exam. If your country’s driving license does not include two-wheelers, you will be required to pass a very easy test. Normally, it costs about 300.000 500.000 VND (~$15 $25) and you can do it by yourself or through service companies but the cost is much higher, about 1.600.000 VND (~$70). Normally, it takes from 5 days to 7 days since you submit full documents if you do through service companies and it will take more time if you do by yourself.

However, converting driving licenses or taking part in driving license exams is really suitable for one who intends to stay in Vietnam for a long time. For foreign tourists who commonly only stay in Vietnam for about a week, it is too complex and time-consuming to do these. So, can you drive a scooter in Vietnam without a license? Honestly speaking, you can. Only when you break the transport law, do the police check your driving license. Therefore, reading and understanding clearly about Vietnam’s transport law is also very essential. It is not only for avoiding the checking of the police but also for your and other people’s safety. According to Vietnamese law, you have to go to jail if you cause a traffic accident in which there are injured or dead people even when you are a foreign person.

Rent or buy a motorbike?

If you are certain that you can drive, you must decide whether you want to rent or buy a motorbike / scooter.

Renting: advantages and disadvantages

  • Saved hassle of selling / buying and paperwork
  • You will probably get more support and advice.
  • You do not have to take care of maintenance yourself and pay for it.
  • One-way costs more by shipping the motor to the original destination.
  • More expensive than buying and chances that you have to pay for damage when you return the motorbike (and if you are scammed by a bad company, you may have to pay for damage that was already there).

Buying: pros and cons

  • Cheaper than renting.
  • If you want to travel through other countries with the same motorbike.
  • No worries about damage you have to pay to the rental company.
  • You have to buy the motor yourself and also sell it again.

Vietnam by Motorbike: My Recommended Route

We started in Ho Chi Minh, and rode all the way up to Hanoi.

After Hanoi, myself and Steven (one of the guys I met in Ho Chi Minh) actually kept our bikes for another 10 days and continued to ride all around North Vietnam. The photo below shows our route across Vietnam.

Vietnam By Motorbike Map

Quick Facts About My Vietnam Motorbike Route: Hoi Chi Minh to Hanoi

  • Ho Chi Minh to Mui Ne took 1 night and 2 days (we got lost).
  • Mui Ne to Dalat took 1 day (approx. 8-10 hours)
  • Dalat to Nha Trang took 1 day (approx. 8 hours)
  • From Nha Trang, we did a 3 day ride inland trip all the way up to Hoi An.
  • After Hoi An, we did the High Van Pass or “Top Gear Route” all the way to Hue. This took approx. 8-10 hours as again we got lost.
  • After Hue, we did another 3-day leg going inland, staying on the Hanoi trail.

Related: Vietnam by Motorbike: 8 Things You Should Read First

Our first day riding was one of the most eventful days we had. We left Ho Chi Minh a little bit after breakfast. Soon, we encountered three breakdowns, crazy traffic, night driving with no lights and even ended up getting lost after just three hours.

Let’s just say it was an awesome start to our adventure.

The first night was also a story in itself. We pulled up in the middle of nowhere and asked if this guy had anywhere for us to sleep. Amazingly, the guy owned a small bar/ barbers (Yes, you read that right!).

He took us around the back (don’t worry, not to kill us) and ripped a piece of wood from a door frame, placed it on the floor, hung up a mosquito net, and VOILA! The three of us had a bed for the night.

Oh, one of us also got a free haircut!

The first half of this epic journey saw us riding along highways, across mountains and coastlines.

The scenery was amazing and different every time we set off. Most days would consist of around 9- 14 hours riding. Why so long? Well, we rode the most scenic routes and took no shortcuts. Yes, our butts were sore after a few days.

Insider Tip: If you want to spend less time riding, stick to the coast. There are more direct routes and the roads are a lot faster. The view won’t be as good though – bare that in mind!

The first half of the journey finished in Hoi An, a small town known for its “old town” and a beautiful river and beach nearby. They also have the ever so popular “Why Not” bar, which let’s just say always leads to an eventful night (5 bucks unlimited drinks kind of eventful).

By this point, we all had broken down and my bike had seen the worse of it. My bike quickly got the name the “Phoenix” as it burst into flames while I was riding out of Nha Trang.

One mechanic, 10 minutes and $3 later, she had risen from the flames and was back on the road. She took me around 400 km further to Hoi An before calling it a day again.

The second half of the journey saw us riding all the way to Hanoi,  where we said goodbye to two of the guys from the Wolf-pack (Yes we had a name!). We then continued to do a loop around the North before finishing back in Hanoi.

This was where we sold our motorbikes to the next adventurous backpackers for the same price we bought them. That’s right, we sold them for $250, which was what we bought them for. Considering we (meaning I) had broken down a lot and put around $120 into it, we felt this was a fair price.

We were honest with the guys buying our bikes and I think they respected that, so they quickly bought them from us. It was a sad day, if I’m honest. We had just spent 6 weeks riding these bikes almost every day and had gone through a lot.

The second half of the journey was where we rode through jungles and over rough terrain. We as a group had one big crash and a few small ones in between.

Despite all the misadventures, we were all having the time of our lives.

We rode the “Top Gear” route, Hai Van Pass, Hoi An, and Ho Chi Minh trail, and in my opinion, the best route of all – the road to Sapa.

In short, we did it all. If you’re thinking of doing this, check out our route and I highly recommend you stay as inland as you can. The jungles, rivers, waterfalls, and the amazing roads will blow you away.

Questions to Consider

A little rest before the adventure begins

For you, there is only one question when it comes to the Vietnamese road-trip: where do I get a bike? Which leads to the real question: is it better to rent or buy a motorbike in Vietnam?

It’s a complex question with no one-size-fits-all answer. And, there is not a lot of information out there to help you make decisions for your needs. What kinds of bikes are available? What are the legalities of riding in Vietnam? What will give you the most freedom for the best price? How long will it take to organise?

These questions and more will come up when you start thinking of a bike trip through Vietnam. Along with the more easily answered, “Can I just bring my bike over?” You could bring your own bike if you have the time, patience and money to organize the import and export along with the fees. However, it is likely to cost you more than the price of the bike by the time you factor in shipping and on the ground help. The mountains of bureaucracy that you would face for this small task and the exorbitant cost will rule out this option for all but the most committed.

Explore Diep Son Island – An untouched place in Nha Trang, Vietnam

Located in located in Van Phong Bay, Van Gia Town, Khanh Hoa Province, about 60km away from Nha Trang. Diep Son consists of 3 small islets and is home to 80 households who are fishermen.

After about an hour floating on the sea, the beautiful archipelago gradually appears. There is an especial thing in Diep Son Island is the extremely unique and interesting 700m sandbar connecting the 3 islands of Diep Son. It makes the scenery of the island more picturesque and gorgeous. Additionally, you can relax by leisurely walking on the white sand beach of the island, or swimming in the blue and clean ocean.

There are many ways for you to get to this beautiful island. A lot of hotels and guesthouses in Nha Trang provide 1 day tour to Nha Trang; however, doing it independently is highly recommend. You can hire a motorbike or take a local bus to Van Gia, which has a port providing a boat to Diep Son.

Adventure in Vietnam

I hired a moped in Vietnam, on the island of Phu Quoc – no problem. The feeling of freedom, of knowing I could do exactly what I wanted every day was incredible and really made that trip.

No doubt you’ll have seen the Top Gear episode, where they drive the bike round Vietnam, well imagine doing that, alone or with friends, and totally on your own time. That could be YOU!

Imagine seeing sights like these as you drive yourself through beautiful Vietnam…

You can either hire a bike for yourself, for the ultimate adventure, or if you fancy easing yourself in gently how about trying a tour?

You could do a nighttime one of Saigon or a day tour to Duong Lam. Alliteratively, download GrabBike, aka Uber for mototaxis. This will give you a feel for the rules (or lack of) on the city roads and a quick lesson on how to survive the likes of Hanoi’s Old Quarter. The Tigit Mekong Motorbike Adventure looks awesome.

Places we avoided in Vietnam:

Mekong Delta

We were planning on going here as one of our last stops in Vietnam, but after hearing very negative things from different people throughout out Vietnam (and because we were pressed for time) we decided against it. People we talked to said they felt like it was a total tourist trap and they felt really pressured into buying things.

Nha Trang

We avoided Nah Trang because everyone we met said it was a dirty city and has become a Russian spring break playground instead of a true Vietnamese city. We did spend 3 hours there (from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m.) while waiting for a bus transfer. We ended up sleeping on the beach for a bit and watched the sunrise, which was nicer than we expected.

The beach was nice at dawn, so if you’re looking for a party on the beach it might be okay, but we heard better things about Mui Né and Phu Quoc Island.

Additionally, we met a couple who did their Scuba diving certification in Nha Trang and ended up collecting trash while underwater because it was so polluted. So it may not be the best place to dive either.

Vietnam Motorcycle, Off-road Motorbike & Scooter Hire In Hanoi

Honestly, we compete on the quality of services and customer support (in perfect English) to customers while they are on the road. Therefore, our prices are not the cheapest but you have our professional assistance whenever you need and this is invaluable. We will get straight to the point based on the current Vietnamese conditions. There is no lie or nonsense answer.

All of our motorbikes are carefully serviced by ourselves, we don’t use any employee, therefore we know the bikes as well as the back of our hands. Not all rental shops know extensively about bike repair and that leads to poor assistance when you need help on the way.

Due to our small office and parking issue in the Old Quarter of Hanoi, short motorbike rentals (less than 2 days) may be not available at times.

To know which motorbike/scooter is the best for you, please watch the below video.
